Your Owen County Community Foundation threw another golf party last week. In fact, it was our 16th annual SMV Realty – Jim Fulford Golf Open. These days we call our event the JFO. It’s become a major tradition at the organization Jim Fulford helped to build. In our very first golf outing way back in 2003, we raised funds to establish the Jim and Wilma Fulford Scholarship Fund in honor of our first OCCF executive director, WWII veteran, educator, first Owen Valley principal, and Sagamore of the Wabash. Jim was a very special man in our state, our community, and our organization.
These days the JFO is about honoring Jim’s legacy and at the same time raising the funds needed to run this philanthropic operation. This year with the help of our sponsors, prize donors, and golfers, we broke the record for the net dollars raised to help the OCCF with donations of $22,399. We thank everyone involved for their generosity.
We broke our record with a little drama as we weren’t sure we’d made it as the JFO ended. We were just a bit short so we did what fund raisers do, we called for a little extra support to put us over the top. I want to thank “Last Minute Sponsor of the Year” Mitch Oard for his on-the-spot gift to ensure we broke the record. It was a nice way to end the day.
The weather cooperated nicely except for a little extra heat throughout the afternoon. But for most of the day, a nice breeze blew the heat off the players enough that they all finished. And the Jerry Maner’s Construction team took the honors at 20 under par to win the fabulous golf package from French Lick Resort & Casino. The winning team members included Jack May, Greg Granger, Jerry Maners, and Jack Noel.
We were all well served again by our amazing hosts at Rolling Meadows Golf Course and Mulligan’s Restaurant. The course was in great shape. The lunch was fantastic. The beer was cold and wet. Thanks to Arlene ‘Arlo’ Crawford and the entire Rolling Meadows team for their help putting on another successful event.
I have to mention Heather Herrington and Maria O’Connor on our OCCF staff for their great work along with our JFO Committee of Wally DeFord, Rob Babbs, John Hackworthy, Deanna Heckman, Brad King and Nick Gillaspy.
We strive to do good for our community and we’re gratified when so many come out to show their support for our work. We are proud to do what we do for our donors and our community.
