A Tribute

We’ll be gathering at Rolling Meadows Golf Course next Thursday, September 19th to host a group of charitably minded golfers to raise operating funds for your Owen County Community Foundation. But this event is not all about raising money. The 17th annual SMV Realty – Jim Fulford Golf Open is a way for us to honor a wonderful man who contributed greatly to the very same community this organization is trying to support. Mr. Fulford is an ideal symbol for our community service here in Owen County.

We will always be well served by stopping to remember and honor Mr. Fulford and those like him. A servant to his fellow citizens in times of war and in times of peace. He risked his life to protect a community that he would later return to and provide the gift of education and leadership.

Hearing complaints about the type of public figures our society often elevates to star status is not at all uncommon. The antidote? Take time to remember the honest people, the selfless folks, the kind and funny neighbors who make communities work. Celebrate the humble citizens that deal with others with compassion and truth. Focusing on good people is the best way to shut out the din of misplaced celebrity worship. We’ll be doing all of this when we gather again this year to celebrate this Owen County star.

So in Mr. Fulford’s honor, we’ll gather 20 foursomes (wait, make that 21 – calls coming in as I write) in the beauty of Rolling Meadows and have some fun playing a game that Mr. Fulford loved and enjoyed into his final years. Our gathering will be full of memories of the days when he still played a full round with his team of buddies. We remember when Mr. Fulford would zip around the course and greet every team in the tournament to offer up his putting skills and to tell a great old joke.

And in the end, Mr. Fulford will help us raise some money just like he did as the first executive director of your OCCF. He still does a lot for Owen County.

We be supported by 54 sponsors next week. Our tournament sponsor SMV Realty leads the way. We have two platinum sponsors this year, Owen County State Bank and Edwards Motors Inc. of Spencer. Our lunch sponsors this year include Boston Scientific, Gordon & Diane Wells, Lifeway Baptist Church, and The Volkers Group, LLC.

We also have 24 gold sponsors, 13 silver sponsors, and 10 “Friends of Mr. Fulford” who are both helping your OCCF and honoring Mr. Fulford’s memory.

This year’s total prizes are valued at over $5,000 – the richest prize package yet. We want to thank our neighbors to the south at the French Lick Casino & Resort for a fantastic prize package for the winning team that includes lodging at the resort and rounds of golf on both the Pete Dye and the Donald Ross course for each of the four members of the winning team.

We have a fun day planned for next week. Tournament check-in starts at 11:00 a.m. Mulligan’s Restaurant at Rolling Meadows will provide the pre-tournament lunch and their great dining room for the post-golf prize presentations. The public is welcome to join us for lunch for a donation of $15. Please let us know in advance so we can plan for enough food.

We hope to see many of our community supporters out at the course next week, but whether you’re a golfer or OCCF donor or not. Take a moment to reflect on the wonderful gifts to Owen County that have been made by Jim Fulford and other selfless public servants like him.

Your Owen County Community Foundation is committed to helping our communities become better places to live, grow, and work. We value community involvement and charitable spirit – and public servants like Jim Fulford.
