Your Owen County Community Foundation will be lionized this weekend by the venerable local service club, the Spencer Lions Club, as we join the 2019 Apple Butter Festival as the Grand Marshall of the 43rd annual Apple Butter Parade. The Spencer Lions selected the OCCF to lead the parade in honor of OCCF’s 25th anniversary. We are humbled by the honor.
Several of our OCCF founding board members will ride in the parade to represent the current board of directors, the staff, and the thousands of donors who have helped us to grow and thrive. Jack Simmerman, Gordon Wells, George Allison, and Julian Duling will make the trip up Main Street. Founders Joe King and Mary Rice were unavailable for the event, but with the late John King and the late John Rogers, helped to form the OCCF in 1994.
Receiving this honor from the Spencer Lions, who have served Spencer and Owen County since 1929, is like getting a supportive pat on the back from your admired older brother. The Lions help our community in many ways in addition to hosting the biggest community festival of the year. Lion’s projects include providing dictionaries to local third graders every year, giving scholarships to Owen Valley High School seniors, recycling eyeglasses and hearing aids, giving free vision screening, hosting the free summer lunch program for area children, and holding the annual Halloween Sight Night. The Spencer Lions also provide support for many other local groups including your OCCF.
The Lions also have very influential friends including Santa Clause himself. They use their inside connection to arrange a visit from Santa every year at Christmas. The local service club also supports programs for the Indiana Lions and Lions Clubs International.
The parade begins this Saturday, September 21st at 1:00 p.m. and will return to the familiar route starting at Main and Cooper Streets and heading north the length of Main Street to Hillside Avenue. The parade reviewing stand and announcers will be at the northwest corner of the Courthouse Square.
Mother Nature is offering up what looks to be a beautiful weekend, so join the parade and visit the Apple Butter Festival held at the Owen County Fairgrounds Saturday, September 21st and Sunday, September 22nd. Great food, entertainment, and apple butter await you. This is the biggest fund-raiser of the year for the Lions so come out and support our Lions who have been supporting our community for ninety years.
The Owen County Community Foundation offers our heartfelt gratitude to the Spencer Lions Club for this wonderful honor and we thank them for their service to our community.
Your Owen County Community Foundation is committed to helping our Owen County communities become better places to live, grow, and work. We value community involvement and charitable spirit like what our Spencer Lions Club demonstrates all year, every year.
Your OCCF would also like to thank the community for the support we received for our 17th annual SMV Realty - Jim Fulford Golf Open that we hosted this week. We’ve had a wonderful outpouring of support and raised a record take to help support the operations of this local charity.
