The Mr. Fulford Open

We are proud to announce that the 17th annual SMV Realty / Jim Fulford Golf Open was our most successful yet. Through the support of our golfers, sponsors, and prize providers, your Owen County Community Foundation raised $23,316, after expenses, to help operate this local charity.

In addition to raising much needed operating funds, we are always proud to honor the memory of Mr. Fulford. Jim Fulford was a much admired member of this community through his service in WWII, director of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, and as a local teacher and principal. He topped off his working career as the first executive director or your OCCF. Whenever he’s mentioned, I’ve noticed that people still feel most comfortable referring to “Mr. Fulford.” Your OCCF and the entire community are lucky to have known him. We were pleased that his daughter Judy Fulford Kinney was able to stop and visit at the tournament this year.

We have many people and organizations to thank for our successful event. Sally Vance and SMV Realty repeated as tournament sponsors to give us a strong start on our fund-raising this year.

Platinum sponsors Owen County State Bank and Edwards Motors of Spencer supported our efforts and fielded teams as part of their sponsorship.

Our lunch sponsors this year were Boston Scientific, Lifeway Baptist Church, Spencer Coffee House, The Volkers Group Investment Planners, and Gordon & Diane Wells.

We fielded twenty-three foursomes last week. To a great extent, the golfers themselves were responsible for the fantastic attendance since they helped us spread the word. We only matched this participation in the very first event when we used the inaugural event to create the Jim & Wilma Fulford Scholarship.

Our gold sponsors were: Babbs Supermarket, BBP Water Corporation, Chandler Funeral Home - Whitaker Chapel, Charles & Marge Neumeyer, China Wok, Chris Wesley - RE/Max Select Associates, Craig Newforth - Monster Trash, David Friedel & Ann Mahrdt, Elite Electric, LLC., Exchange Club of Spencer, Gosport Manufacturing Company, Inc., International Ventriloquism & Arts Festival, Jim & Brenda DeCoursey, Joe & Brenda King, John & Cindy Hackworthy, John & Sylvia Dyar, Our Community Bank, Jim Mann for State Representative, Owen Valley Flooring, Phyllis Tucker, Sons of American Legion, Tad & Shirley Wilson, The AME Group, The Home Team Realty, and Valley Optical, Inc.

Silver sponsors for 2019 were: Knights of Pythias - Eden Lodge, Edward Jones Investments - Marcus Robinson, Insurance Services, Inc., John Fuhs - Attorney at Law, King Rentals, Marilyn Hart, Mark & Pennie Rogers, Richard Norman - Attorney at Law, Rob & Cassie Babbs, Bob & Alice McAuley, State Representative Bob Heaton, Kay’s Lawn Service, R.E. Casebeer & Sons, and Walton Funeral Service - DBA West Parrish & Pedigo

Our “Friends of Mr. Fulford” sponsors included Damon & Suzi Summerlot, Don & Marilyn Jackson, Dr. Chad & Beth Briggs, Dr. Charles & Kay Cochran, Lew & Gretchen Scholl, Marilyn DeFord, Nancy & Richard Lorenz, Nate's Candy Jar, Sally & Terry Wright, and Wally & Kathy DeFord.

Our wonderful grand prize was supplied by our friends at the French Lick Resort & Casino. Other prize providers included: Babbs Supermarket, Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort & Inn, Casey’s General Store, Canyon Inn, Crossroads 46 Diner, Wally & Kathy DeFord, Horseshoe Southern Indiana Hotel & Casino, Indiana Fever, Indiana Pacers, Indianapolis Colts, Indianapolis Indians, Main Street Coffee, Millie McGee’s Gosport Diner, Nate’s Candy Jar, Pine Woods Golf Course, Rising Star Casino-Resort, Rolling Meadows Golf Course, and Spencer Coffee House.

Darrell White once again donated his time and skills to provide team photos for our golfers and Jordan Bland of Two Avocados Design provided our special award plaque for Jerry Maners who was recognized for his commitment to the event by playing in all seventeen “Fulfords.”

Our wonderful hosts at Rolling Meadows and Mulligan’s Restaurant seem to give us better service every year. And the course is absolutely beautiful these days. We offer our thanks to the entire Rolling Meadows team for their great support of our event.

Of course, we couldn’t have achieved this success without the great work of our leader Wally DeFord who puts his efforts and experience to work for the OCCF. Wally is completing his last year as a volunteer member of our board of directors. Our administrative director Maria O’Connor keeps all the details and gifts in order. We had a great team of current and former staff working hard on the event this year. Former donor relations rep Suzi Summerlot put a lot of work into our success before she re-retired. Summer intern Caroline Sebastian helped get us off to a great start. Heather Herrington who ran the event last year came back to help with the transition, and our new donor relations manager Karah Bobeck did a great job working on her first “Fulford.”

Volunteers at the tournament were Marilyn Jackson, Marge Neumeyer, and Suzi Summerlot. We’re are lucky to have such a great group supporting us.

And finally, we thank Mr. Fulford for the beautiful weather.
